InterNIC's New Security Options

InterNIC recently instituted a new security system, called GUARDIAN, intended to protect domain name records from unauthorized changes. Here, in a nutshell, is what is involved.

• At some time in the future you may need to change or modify information on your domain name record. These changes could include new contact names, and changes in street or Email addresses, telephone numbers, etc. These changes are normally made by the domain contacts, and to prevent just anyone from making these changes (possibly without your knowledge) InterNIC has instituted a new security system.

  The default option for new domain applicants ties future changes to your Email address. This means that InterNIC will accept future changes only if they are mailed from the same Email address given on the original application (unless you later change it). Therefore, you must make sure that if you ever change your Email address, you should notify InterNIC before the change is made since they will not accept changes from a new Email address.
  

  After your domain is registered you can, if you want, tie any changes to a Password that you supply InterNIC, or to a security scheme using PGP (stands for Pretty Good Privacy) software.

Unfortunately, InterNIC does not allow you to set up either of these last two schemes when applying for a new domain name and so, if you are interested in these, you have to wait until after the domain is registered.
